The Reforms of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz and Its Effect on the Situation of Shiites

Abstract
Omar ibn Abd al-Aziz can be considered one of the few Umayyad caliphs who, unlike his predecessors, tried to establish a different situation in the Islamic society, especially for the Shiites, by implementing a series of reforms. Therefore, the question of the current research, which was carried out using the descriptive and analytical method, is: what effect did the reforms of Omar ibn Abd al-Aziz have on the situation of the Shiites?
The findings of the research show that the Umayyad reformer caliph, realizing the importance of the Shiite issue for the Umayyad government and in order to satisfy them, made the following reforms: he returned Fadak to the Household of the Prophet (S), re-established khums (one fifth of gain), guaranteed the pensions of the Alawites and Bani Abd al-Mottaleb, and instead of cursing, honored and respected Imam Ali (AS) and his progeny. As a result of these reforms, while an economic situation and a more suitable political and intellectual atmosphere was created for the Shiites, they were able to carry out their religious and political affairs more easily under the leadership of Imam Baqer (AS).
