Abstract
In examining the religious circumstances of fourth to sixth-century Iran, the era of the Samanid and the Buyid dynasties at the beginning of the fourth century can be seen as an age of intellectual freedom in Iran (characterized by a tolerance and nurturing of various religious practices). However, as time passed and the Ghaznavid and Seljuk Turks gained power, Shia poets were marginalized and humiliated. In this study, we encounter notable figures in the history of literature who were ardent supporters of the Ahl al-Bayt and the earliest and greatest defenders of Shiite beliefs. Despite the fact that, due to their loyalty to the love of ʿAlī (Ḥaydar), their status remained unknown and overlooked during their lifetimes, they still carry the honor of seeking refuge in the unwavering faith of Aḥmad (the Prophet), and they are considered among the most prominent literary figures of this land. This article explores the connections between Shia Islam and Persian literature, identifying key Shia perspectives in the poetry of the fourth to sixth centuries AH. The Shiite leanings of several notable poets (Rūdakī, Kisāʾī, Nāṣir Khusraw, Firdawsī, Khāqānī, and Anwarī) are also examined. The presence of renowned Persian poets, such as Rūdakī, Kisāʾī, Firdawsī, Nāṣir Khusraw, and others—who, both in technical and artistic terms, were pioneers and forerunners of Persian poetry and staunch supporters of the Ahl al-Bayt—demonstrates the spiritual victory of Shia Islam in those difficult times. Even under harsh persecution of Shia Muslims, these poets boldly and fearlessly expressed their affection for the Prophet’s Household, thereby revealing a chapter of spiritual triumph of Shiite beliefs in those years.
